Video Games: Do they Damage Your Eyes?
Although bad eye sight is mainly attributed to genetic factors Nintendo DS, Xbox, iPhone, Playstation and I’m sure there is many more, now play a massive role in reduced vision. 50-60% of adolescents are myopic (near-sighted) according to a report on child near-sightedness conducted by Chinese, American and Australian specialists. In saying all this some doctors disagree and other doctors have actually prescribed playing the Nintendo DS for children with lazy eyes. Patching the good eye the child plays the DS for two hours a day for one week and vision has been seen to improve dramatically.
A player’s posture and position relative to the screen are key to reducing eye strain. You need to:
- Sit directly in front of the computer monitor or at least 6 feet away from a regular television screen or 10 feet from a large television screen
- Have good lighting not just the glare from the telly
- Don’t play for longer than one hour without taking a break.
- If you wear glasses use them while playing the video games
- Remember to blink it moistens your eyes
- Look away from the screen as often as you can and focus on something else other than the television/computer screen
Honestly I think if near-sightedness runs in the genes and you are a serious gamer then you will more than likely need glasses at some stage, so get your eyes checked regularly!
