Our eyes are the “windows” to our soul, so we need tears to wash them every now and again! As far as I know no other animal or mammal can cry, only humans. When we cry our body goes through chemical changes. There is three different types of tears:

1) Basal tears: These tears keep our eyes lubricated constantly.
2) Reflex tears: These tears are produced when our eyes get irritated by something like dirt or onions.
3) Emotional tears: Obviously these tears are triggered by emotions like sadness or anger.

Tears produced during emotional crying have a chemical composition which differs from other types of tears. They contain significantly greater quantities of the hormones. When emotions affect us, the nervous system stimulates the cranial nerve, in the brain and this sends signals to the neurotransmitters to the tear glands. Thus, we cry .

The largest tear gland, the lacrimal gland produces the tears of emotion and reflex. Many believe that the body, in times of emotional stress, depends on this gland to release excess amounts of chemicals and hormones, returning it to a stable state.

I know its seems a little complicated for something that is so natural to most of us but that’s the way the body works!

Everywhere you look now a celebrity is wearing specs of some sort, don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great but sometimes they can really get it wrong.

Anne Hathaway has to be one of the worst offenders. I know she loves to wear her specs out in public in places some other celebs wouldn’t dare. God love her I sometimes wonder does she look in the mirror before she leaves the house!

Take a look at the pic, the specs are really nice but her eyebrows are far too heavy to carry off the look she is trying to achieve. All I can see is eyebrows, sorry Anne.

Anne is not the only guilty celeb specs offender. What celebs annoy you with their ridiculous glasses wearing?

Sore Eyes? Don't worry!

Every once in a while you are bound to get some sort of eye condition. They are more common than you might think! Here is the top five.

1. Redness: Red eye can be caused by an infection, an allergy such as hayfever, and irritation such as smoke or dust, it can be any number of things really! If the eye is infected there will more than likely be a discharge. See your doctor or optician for treatment.
2. Floaters: So many people have floaters on a constant basis which are harmless. These are most commonly described as specks that float across your vision. A sudden increase in floaters and/or flashing lights may indicate a retinal tear or detachment if this happens to you seek medical attention immediately.
3. Soreness: Conjunctivitis (also known as Pinkeye) is the most common cause of eye soreness. It is an inflammation of the white of the eye. A crust can form on the eye while sleeping so it may be difficult to open in the morning. Bath the eye in warm salty water along with eye drops to clear it up. Consult your doctor or optician if the symptoms persist.
4. Fogginess: This can be a sign of Glaucoma which is damage to the optic nerve from too much pressure in the eye. Once detected, it can be treated, preventing further damage and loss of sight. A regular eye check will detect any changes!
5. Cloudiness: This usually indicates Cataracts. The only cure for this is surgery to have them removed. They are very common among the elderly, smoking can also increase the risk of getting them.

If you have any of the above conditions please consult your doctor or optician before self treatment!

I don’t know if any of you have read the Millennium Trilogy by Steig Larsson, I have and I loved it. The first book “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” has been made into a film and Daniel Craig is playing one of the lead characters Mikael Blomkvist an investigative journalist, hence the sexy specs. The make of the specs are still unknown to us but if you do happen to know please let us know! The film was released here in Ireland on St. Stephens Day so let me know if you have seen it and how you think it compares to the book!

Let me start off the new year edition of “Specs In The City” with what can only be described as a hum dinger! WTF was this guy thinking? It has to be a joke but yet he is not smiling! I really don’t know where to start… how about the fact that his glasses are extremely crooked and don’t fit him at all! Please tell me I’m not the only person that finds this picture disturbing?
